Q&A with Helen Whiteman from CILEx Regulation

  1. What is your role at CILEx Regulation?
  2. Chief Executive Officer. I’ve been in this role for almost three years, having worked on the professional body side of the business prior this.

  3. What sort of projects are you working on at the moment?
  4. Quite a broad range at the moment. The Lord Chancellor has just approved our application to become a licensing body for alternative business structures (ABS) so I’m working with the team on getting us ready to support new applications. We are also working on new Education Standards which we will put out to consultation over the coming months. Our Board has just revisited its strategy and I’m working to re-present it with a more explicit emphasis on delivering regulation to meet consumer needs and expectations. We have an ambitious business plan and I love the diversity of my role, no one day is the same!

  5. What is one thing you wish people knew about your job/CILEx Regulation?
  6. I wish more young people had better access to good careers advice. That is the basis from which they can make informed choices and would open their eyes to broader opportunities such as non-university routes into our profession. The legal profession is so much more than solicitors and barristers!

  7. Tell us an interesting fact about you.
  8. I love music, so I’m often caught humming in the office. I play the saxophone, have sung in a few cover bands and regularly attend gigs.

  9. Where’s your favourite place in the world to visit?
  10. That’s tough. I love Sydney, it has a lot to offer. You can be in awe of the breathtaking blue mountains to the west, enjoy some gorgeous beaches, fabulous nightlife and an explosion of culinary delights. If you don’t fancy the long flight, then Seville is well worth a visit.

  11. Who is your biggest inspiration? (personally or professionally)
  12. Personally, my father. He was a Chartered Legal Executive of CILEx for many years and taught me many valuable life lessons. His work ethic has rubbed off on me.

  13. What three items would you take with you to a desert island?
  14. Music, a penknife and a water purifier. I’ve watched too many Ray Mears shows!
