What you might need to know

The Legal Services Board, the oversight regulator for legal services, has put in place requirements on the profession to tell consumers about how to make a complaint. This includes a requirement to signpost to the Legal Ombudsman, as the independent body that resolves complaints about lawyers.

Signposting requirements

The Legal Services Board (launches website in new window) published guidance about these requirements on their website:

Each of the approved regulators has also issued guidance about these requirements.

We have published a leaflet called Making a complaint. If you are a lawyer, giving this leaflet to your clients will help you fulfil the Legal Services Board requirements. These state that you must tell clients about your complaints handling procedures and how to get in touch with the Legal Ombudsman - information which is included in this leaflet.

Our 'Here to help' leaflet explains how to make a complaint and sets out the steps to follow. You can see it here - Here to help.
